“This letter is written concerning and on behalf of my daughter Angela (H.) who is receiving the treatment. My daughter was diagnosed at age 6 and has been brittle since the beginning in spite of the best medical care and diligence by her caregivers. It would be impossible to recount the times that her blood sugars have been so low that it seemed there was no hope of bringing her back from the edge. Over the years she has developed retinopathy with numerous laser surgeries and one major eye surgery. Angie suffers from neuropathy in her legs and feet she has heart disease and kidney disease she also has gastroparesis and hypertension. Nausea and bowel problems plague her.
All of this said, our family’s greatest fear is of the hypoglycemic episodes with seizures. I could tell of countless terrifying occurrences where it has been a miracle that she is still with us. For example, when she had her son I went to see her in the hospital when he was just a couple of days old. I walked into the room to find the baby sleeping and Angie totally unresponsive. I found her with graham crackers in her mouth, and no one could revive her. Seven or eight doctors and nurses worked frantically to revive her but they could not find a vein that would start. Her blood sugar was in the 20’s, this is how quickly things go wrong with her. I cannot express the fear we had of her being alone or of her dying in the night no one ever knowing she was in trouble. That was our life before (CAT) treatment.
Before she started therapy these horrific episodes were about 8 to 10 times a year on average. Since beginning treatment the severe insulin swings have been reduced and the pain in her feet and legs from neuropathy has decreased. Her energy level is much improved. She looks better has more hopeful outlook and has been able to spend fewer days in bed.
It is the deepest desire of myself and our whole family that Angie be able to continue treatment and that the treatment be available to more people who are suffering. CAT has given Angie and all of us hope that she can live better while research continues on finding a cure. If there is ever any way that I could be of assistance in speaking to groups as an advocate, please feel free to call upon me. Thank you for your help. My daughter is one of the greatest joys of my life and is needed by her husband and beautiful children.”
